(a) User Survey is one method of collecting demographic information. Describe this method. [5]
Answer: Method: These surveys may be conducted on the Internet,
through forms on web browsers[1] and e-mail [1]. Surveys are also
conducted through phone surveys, postal mail and personal interviews
[1]. Personal information [1] such as gender, age, preferences, beliefs,
lifestyles, and opinions [1] can be collected[2].

(b) Describe three limitations of online surveys. [6]
Answer:
- Respondents select themselves for the surveys [1] hence these
surveys may not accurately represent the general web population as a
whole.[1]
- Respondents may provide inaccurate or false information; [1] survey
results may be affected by the type of questions used, and the order
and phrasing of the questions. [1]
- Forms-based surveys limit their respondents [1] to those who use
forms-supported browsers.[1]

(c) The 3rd GVU survey in 1995 revealed that the majority of web users were in a computer-related profession. The 1996 survey placed educational-related
professions above computer-related professions. Suggest two other professions whose members’ use of the web has probably increased since 1995, and explain why you think these professions can benefit from web use. [4]
Answer: the retail profession (on-line shopping) [1] – the web allows
products to be advertised, clearly described, and delivered to the user.
Increased Internet security means that user are less reluctant to use
credit-card numbers over the internet. [1] The travel industry [1]: the
Internet enables tourist venues to be promoted globally in a very easy
manner, and users can take their time over choosing their holiday
destination – previously, only travel agents has this information [1].
